About 2GB 873 AM
Theosophical Broadcasting station Pty Ltd received a radio broadcasting license. Hence, it launched its first program in August 1926. It is famous for keeping the world’s largest reservoir of transcribed recordings as it started on-airing the transcribed broadcastings in 1933 at the frequency of 950 kHz. But, it shifted to 870 kHz in 1935. Denison Estates Ltd bought this station. The chairman, Sir Hugh Denison, recruited a new board of directors. He selected Frederick Daniel and A. E. Bennette as the station manager. This time is considered ‘The Golden Age of Australian Radio Drama,’ as the director directed many radio dramas. Some of the famously enacted dramas are Dolly and Dan and Doctor Mac. In February 1938, the station formed Macquarie Radio Network. In 1940, the public acknowledged this station as the largest production house of radio drama broadcastings for the South Hemisphere.
It also contributed to World War II by providing transcript recordings to the Australian Army situated in Papua New Guinea and Pacific Islands. On 27 August 1955, Ted Harris, the station announcer, provided a detailed description of the Davis Cup from Forest Hills. Therefore, 2GB is the first news station in the Australian radio market. In the 1960s, Broadcasting Associates Pty Ltd purchased this radio station. In 1964, Fairfax purchased the 25% share of 2GB. But still, the Theosophical Society operated some of the programs of this station till 1975. On 23 November 1978, the station switched to the current frequency. On 1 April 2015, Macquarie Radio Network and Fairfax Radio Network started their joint venture.
