102.3 The Wave FM which is also known by the name of The Wave is an FM that is situated at Nanaimo region of Canada. The owner is Island Radio which is another organization of Jim Pattison Group. The frequency at which it operates is 102.3 FM.
History of 102.3 The Wave
This radio first went on air in May 1949 with the name of CHUB. Its frequency at that time was 1570 AM and power 250 watts. Its studio was located at Malaspina Hotel situated in Nanaimo. The first program that is broadcasted was the Empire Day Parade. It had taken its name CHUB from the nickname of Nanaimo city was called Hub City. George Randall and Vancouver Sun owned it. During 1951, it enhanced its power from 250 watts to 1000 watts to provide coverage to the adjacent areas. The different hosts during that time were Chuck Rudd, Sheila Hassel, DJ Larry Thomas, Lyall Feltham, Pat O’Neill, Jim Robson, etc.
Later on, in 1959, it increased its power ten-fold from 1000 watts to 10000 watts, moving the transmitter to Cedar. Bob Giles, Jack Kyle and Joe Lawlor bought CHUB in 1962. In 1968, the station changed its location to Esplanade Street in Nanaimo. Benchmark Ventures Inc. became the new owners of CKWV in 1986 and made it a profit organization. After some years, it got merged with its rival at that time namely CKEG and its frequency got changed to 102.3 FM.
It also changed its located and moved to share the space with the office of CKEG. During 2005, it changed its company name to Island Radio due to its established position in all those years and due to acquiring CKLR FM and CJAV. At the end of that year, Jim Pattison Broadcast Group and Island Radio Limited made a joint announcement regarding the selling of six radio stations belonging to Island Radio to Jim Pattison. As a result, Jim Pattison became the owner of Island Radio Stations in June 2006.
