History
Radio-Cité (1977 – 1990)
On May 7, 1977, CITE FM signed on-air as a sister station to 730 CKAC. Telemedia owns the station. After some time, it became CKAC FM. But it changed the call sign to CITE FM before it reached the airwaves. In Sherbrooke, a co-owned FM channel began using the call letters CITE FM at 102.7. Sherbrooke station became CITE-FM-1 when 107.3 in Montreal went on air. The call sign implies that the Sherbrooke station is a repeater of the Montreal station.
CITE-FM-1 had local announcers and commercials, but the music playlist was the same. The station can easily be heard in much of Montreal and its suburbs due to Sherbrooke station’s powerful signal. Telemedia planned CITE-FM to be on 93.5 MHz, but CRTC changed it. As Radio-Cité, CITE FM aired a beautiful music format. It featured middle-of-the-road (MOR) vocals in French and English and well-known songs’ instrumental covers. Radio increases the number of vocals to attract younger listeners.
Rock-Détente (1990-2011)
In 1990, the station switched to a soft adult contemporary format. It was renamed Cité Rock-Détente. Astral Media purchased Telemedia’s radio stations in Quebec and the Maritimes. It became the sister channel of Astral’s CKMF FM. Astral rebuilt the Rock Détente network with a new logo in 2004. Cité Rock-Détente being renamed as simply “107.3 RockDétente.”
Rouge FM (2011-present)
FM ended its 21-year run with the “RockDétente” branding on August 18, 2011, at 4:00 PM. All the channels, including CITE, were rebranded as Rouge FM. The first song under “Rouge” was I Gotta Feeling by Black Eyed Peas.
