680 News Toronto is a commercial all-news radio channel broadcast from Toronto, Ontario, serving the Greater Toronto Area, Canada. The station works under the Rogers Sports & Media subsidiary of Rogers Communications. The AM station started transmission on August 8, 1962. It became Canada’s first solo radio to transmit an all-news radio format. The radio’s original call sign is CFTR, Canada’s First, Ted Rogers. CFTR studios are at downtown Toronto’s Rogers Building at Bloor and Jarvis Streets. The transmitter is on the southern edge of Lake Ontario at Oakes and Winston Road (near the QEW and Casablanca Road) in nearby Grimsby.
CFTR transmits with 50,000 watts, which is the highest strength allowed for AM stations in Canada. It needs to use a complicated directional antenna system to keep from interfering with other stations on 680 AM. In addition to an analog broadcast, CFTR is also streaming online and simultaneously broadcast on CKIS-second FM’s HD digital subchannel. Channel 958 of Bell Satellite TV also simultaneously broadcasts CityNews 680. The sister channels are CHFI FM, CJCL, CKIS FM, CFMT DT, CITY DT, and CJMT DT. The station’s transmission is on-air live streaming on the internet.
