92.1 Rock Timmins is a Canadian radio station broadcasting mainstream rock format from Timmins, Ontario. It began transmission in 1948 as CKGB FM by Roy Thomson, a simulcast of AM sister station CKGB’s CBC Trans-Canada Network programming. The FM station got the callsign CFTI in 1976 after Thomson sold the stations in 1972. Telemedia subsequently purchased the stations in 1980. As network coverage was now available in the region via CBCJ FM, CFTI was permitted in 1984 to discontinue its affiliation with CBC Radio.
The station’s branding (as Q92), callsign CJQQ, and format, which had been popular on Telemedia’s CJRQ in Sudbury, were adopted by Telemedia in 1992. Standard Broadcasting acquired Telemedia in 2002 and sold all of Telemedia’s stations in Northern Ontario to Rogers Media. CJQQ FM changed the name of the station to 92.1 Rock on June 7, 2016. The station shares some programming with CJRQ-FM in North Bay and shares a broad format with CJRQ FM in Sudbury. Its programming includes information, political talk, news, weather forecast, traffic updates, and music. Listeners can also listen to its transmission through live streaming on the internet worldwide.
