History of CBC Radio One Vancouver AM 690
The station came into existence during 1925 by the name CNRV. The owner was a Canadian National Radio network. During 1933, Canadian Radio Broadcasting Commission bought this station, and it became CRCV. Then, CBC was formed in 1936, and it took over the operations of CRBC. Thus, CRCV was named as CBR. During 1941, it changed its frequency to 1130 and again switched to 690 during the year 1952. It was during 1967 that the move of changing its operating power from 10k watts to 50k watts. CBU applied to CRTC in 2008 to rebroadcast its programming. During the same year, CBU started to test its FM rebroadcaster at 88.1 FM under the name CBU 2 FM.
Its operating power was 19.5k watts. After that, it went on the air. Moreover, it also sought permission to simulcast on different transmitters in Nanaimo and along the Sunshine Coast. However, CRTC denied this request as there were no frequencies available in that region. During 2011, CBC sought permission from CRTC in order to enhance the area covered by the transmitter of CBU 2 FM. It had suggested that the antenna’s height should be increased and the operating power become 97600 watts. The permission regarding the transmitter was granted in 2012. During 2017, it again switched its power in 2018 from 50k watts to 25k watts.
