CHIN Radio is a commercial radio station broadcasting at 100.7 MHz frequency in Ontario, Canada. “CHIN” is pronounced like the Italian drinking toast cin. The name can also refer to CHINa. CHIN Radio/TV International owns the station and carries a Multilingual radio format. The company is also co-owned with CHIN-1-FM at 91.9 MHz and CHIN 1540 AM. Each of the three stations has a different schedule of ethnic programming.
Its active broadcasting power is 8,500 watts. The station studios are at College Street in the Palmerston-Little Italy neighborhood of Toronto, and the transmitter is atop the CN Tower. It officially announced broadcast transmission in 1967. Its owners were permitted to build a building so they could add an FM station in Toronto with distinct ethnic programming. Johnny Lombardi, a broadcaster in Toronto, and his then partner James Ditson, a former mayor of North York, founded CHIN-AM-FM.
They saw that Toronto’s growing ethnic groups needed multilingual radio. Its weekday programming is in Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, and South Asian languages. On weekends, the programming is on-air in Kurdish, Serbian, Slovenian, and the Caribbean. Besides this, the channel airs 24 hours transmission on the internet through live streaming around the world.
