CISV FM, Native Communications Inc (NCI) has been broadcasting since September of 1971 in Swan River, Northern Manitoba, Canada. FM is a public broadcaster designed for and by Indigenous people. It is a non-partisan organization. The channel is regarded as “The Voice of Indigenous People.” It is also a non-profit organization that has registered charity status. In addition, it is an educational/cultural entity, reaching over 75 communities. The station ventured into television production in 1985. Its programs have appeared on CBC Manitoba, North of Winnipeg, and on the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN). TV channels produced hundreds of programs, like current affairs programs and children’s shows.
Canada’s most significant Indigenous radio network currently reaches 98% of Manitoba, from Churchill to Winnipeg. CISV FM receives some funds from the federal government through the Northern Native Broadcast Access Program under the Department of Canadian Heritage. FM also generated self-revenue by selling air-time for community events, including gospel jam broadcasts and live talent shows. Gospel jam events are broadcast on Saturday and Sunday evenings, while talent shows air on Friday nights. Its two major transmitters, 105.5-FM Winnipeg/Selkirk and 91.5-FM Brandon/Westman have a total power of 200,000 watts. It broadcast on 93.3 MHz frequency as well as streamed live on the internet worldwide.
