History of CJBK AM
On January 25, 1967, CJBK went on air as CJOE. JOE in the call sign stood for Joe McManus, the founder of the channel. It originally featured a Beautiful Music format. Eventually, FM started to supplement the easy listening music with soft rock and then Top 40 music during the evening hours. In 1972, Rick Richardson (two-thirds Baron Communications, Ltd. and one-third Bruce Communications, Ltd.) purchased the channel from McManus.
Richardson took control of CJOE and changed the call letters to CJBK on September 6, 1972. FM also adopted a full-time Top 40 music format. In the 1970s, its main catchphrase was “Have a Good Day!” and it added an FM sister, CJBX-FM 92.7, with country-formatted. Middlesex-Lambton Broadcasters Ltd acquired CJBK and CJBX. Then it shifted CJBK format to adult contemporary in August of that year. In 1989, it began broadcasting on AM stereo and flipped from AC to oldies format in early 1992.
London Communications, Inc. again purchased CJBK and CJBX in September 1993 and moved to the current News/Talk format on August 12, 1996. The channels were sold again in 1999 to Telemedia. In 2002, Standard Radio acquired Telemedia’s London stations. Astral Media acquired Standard Broadcasting’s terrestrial radio and television assets in October 2007. On June 27, 2013, Astral merged with Bell Media; Bell Media operates CJBK.
