CKDU 88.1 FM Halifax is the largest campus and community radio station in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Atlantic Canada. It began its transmission in 1985, growing out of the Dalhousie University campus. The station is owned and operated by not-for-profit CKDU FM Society. It is also a member of the National Campus and Community Radio Association. FM hosted the National Campus and Community Radio Conference in 1999 and 2011.
CKDU 88.1 FM Halifax is broadcasting at 3,200 watts on 88.1 MHz frequency on the FM band. Through its third-language shows, it offers cutting-edge music in a wide array of genres, current affairs programming, and cultural shows. In addition, it transmits 24 hours on the internet through live streaming around the world.
History of CKDU 88.1 FM Halifax
In 1964, Student radio started at Dalhousie as a radio club. After that, the station into the newly completed Dalhousie Student Union building in 1969. FM broadcast throughout the building via a system of speakers. In 1975, the radio club became CKDU and started transmission through closed-circuit to Dal residences. In 1983, Dalhousie students voted to convert to FM. Then began broadcasting to the larger world at 4:00 P.M. It started transmission at the frequency 97.5 FM. Then in 2006, FM changed its frequency to 88.1 FM.
Programming
The station highlights many issues in their programming, such as Homelessness or Aboriginal Awareness. It also covered Free Palestine national broadcast, Halifax Pride Week, and Prisoner’s Justice Day. FM has also participated in the national Dig Your Roots broadcasts, which gave airtime to under-represented genres. The genres are underground Hip Hop, earth-bending Electronic Dance, ground-breaking Spoken Word, and down-to-earth Roots. FM also encourages and supports the participation of underrepresented groups, including people who identify as Mi’kmaq and Maliseet.
