History of CKGL AM 570
The channel was initially established in 1949 as CKCR FM, simulcasting the programming of CKCR. Great Lakes Broadcasting acquired the station in 1965, a consortium that included Maclean-Hunter. FM changed its callsigns to CHYM (pronounced as “chime”) that year. The former DJs on the channel were Gene Scott, Keith Sterling, Vic Thomas, Sandy Hoyt, and Larry Shannon. For the first time on CHYM, it launched distinct programming in 1968. Its call sign again changed to the current CKGL “Kitchener, Great Lakes” in 1972.
Maclean-Hunter took over full station ownership in 1982. In 1994, 570 news became part of Roger Media. On June 19, 1997, it changed its format to news/talk. For the morning and afternoon drive time slots, FM adopted the popular all-news format in late 2005. CKGL radio won the award of RTNDA Edward R. Murrow for “Best News Cast” in 2007. On Friday, October 6, 2006, the winning newscast was transmitted at 7 AM. Most of the channels share common programs. Rogers TV serves the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Labrador, and Ontario. Its transmission is on-airs only in communities served by Rogers’ cable and telecom division. TV Rogers is its French counterpart. It serves more than 2.3 million cable subscribers.
The channel’s programming is produced by volunteers, associations, and community partners, who assist with the content and production of these programs. Its former name was Rogers Television (1968–2008). It rebranded itself and moved to Roger TV in April 2008.
