91.7 Giant FM is a radio station broadcasting from Welland, Ontario, Canada. The station broadcasts a classic rock format. Its original call letter is CIXL FM which means CI eXtra Large (Giant size). It is one of some commercial FM radio channels that can be heard in the United States on its frequency, as frequencies between 88.1 and 91.9 MHz are reserved for noncommercial stations (a requirement not necessary in Canada, where CIXL hails from).
Due to its location, CIXL competes directly with WGRF Buffalo, CFLZ FM Fort Erie, Stingray’s CHBM FM Toronto, and WHTT Buffalo. Giant FM’s studios are on Forks Road, on the border of Port Colborne and Welland, and its transmitters are in a field behind the studio. It has effective radiator power of 27,420 watts and average vertical and horizontal polarization with a class B station. Wellport Broadcasting owns the station. It airs various programming, including music, talk shows, information, interviews, debate, hot topics, events, concerts, live coverage, sports shows, weather, and traffic updates. It also can be heard on the official website through live streaming on the internet.
History of 91.7 Giant FM
Wellport Broadcasting Ltd., the station’s initial owner, began CHOW as the station in June 1957 (known on-air as “C-How,”). Its former frequency was 1470 kHz on the AM dial. FM offered an easy listening format until 1975, when it switched to country. CJFT in Fort Erie, Ontario, received a license, allowing it to switch to the FM frequency. The CRTC once more rejected Wellport’s request for a new FM radio station in Port Colborne in 1992. The first native woman in Canada to operate a commercial radio station, Suzanne Rochon-Burnett, bought the station in 1994 through the business 1019415 Ontario Inc. It switched to 91.7 MHz in 1999 with the brand name Spirit 91.7.
The CRTC granted the station permission in 1998 to move CHOW-transmitter FMs and reduce the broadcasting power from 27,420 watts to 25,000 watts. In 2004, David Holgate, the station’s current owner, bought it. The same year, it also moved to an adult hit format, adopting its current branding and call sign. The owner of CIXL, RB Communications Ltd., applied on December 9 to operate a new 89.1 MHz country music station in Welland. On June 26, 2014, the CRTC approved the new station. Stingray Group announced that it had acquired the two stations owned by RB Communications on May 10. Since the sale fell through, Well port Broadcasting is still the current owner.
