History of Pure Country 106
The radio station was formerly established in 1943, with the call sign CEPS at 1450 AM in Nobel. After World War II, Gordon Ellsworth Smith (the station’s owner) wanted to affiliate with CBC Radio’s Dominion Network, but this was not possible in Nobel. That’s why in the summer of 1945, they closed the station and moved to Orillia. Then FM relaunched as AM 1450 CFOR on September 3. In the following year, the station joined the Dominion Network. It moved to 1570 AM in 1954, and a fire destroyed the station’s transmitter building in 1957.
However, it was back on the air within a day with the help of the other broadcasters. Later, FM increased its broadcasting power to 10,000 watts daytime and 5,000 watts nighttime. In 1962, the Dominion Network affiliation was dissolved and the affiliation transferred to the CBC Radio Network. The CBC affiliation also disbanded in 1964 and was sold to a consortium that included Maclean-Hunter. The station’s sole owner was Maclean Hunter. In 1993, FM changed its frequency to 105.9 MHz. CFOR move to 105.9 as CICX in 1993. Using the “EZ Rock” brand, it flipped to an adult contemporary format in 1996.
In 2002, the station was sold to Rogers Communications. After that, the station changed its branding to “105.9 Lite FM.” In August 2003, radio again switched to an adult format as Jack FM. The station dropped Jack FM’s brand name and flipped to a Rock format. On May 21, 2008, FM approved reducing the average effective radiated power from 43,000 watts to 10,600 watts by increasing the antenna height and relocating the antenna. Bell Media declared that it would purchase CICX FM on August 9, 2017. CRTC approved the application on February 14, 2018. On May 28, 2019, FM was renamed Pure Country 106 as part of a nationwide rebranding.
