History of Pure Country 99
CKLC began its transmission on the AM dial at 1380 in 1953. It took the call letters from Kingston’s nickname, the “Limestone City.” In 1985, pure country 99 began broadcasting on FM stereo. In favor of a national sports radio network, the station changed its format from adult contemporary to The Team in 2001. After some years, the owner CHUM Limited reversed the decision and changed an adult standards format to “All-time favorites.”
98.9 Kingston appealed to change its frequency to FM band at 98.9 in April 2007, and CRTC approved an application on August 28, 2007. In October 2007, it started broadcasting a test signal on 98.9 FM. The station also announced that “Kingston’s newest radio station” will be launching either “soon” or “in the weeks to come.” The test signal included a classic alternative rock format. After a short test period, FM made the flip from AM to FM on November 29, 2007.
CHUM Limited was acquired by CTV globe media Bell Media in 2007. Bell Media has applied to convert CKLC to 98.9 MHz with an average effective radiated power of 8,700 watts. The Commission approved that application on August 28. On November 29, 2007, the station established its FM signal and moved from easy listening to an alternative as 98.9 The Drive. CKLC started a wide range of music on May 27, 2019. FM flipped to the country as Pure Country 99 the next day as all other Bell Media-owned country stations.
