History of Sportsnet 590 The Fan CJCL:
Historically, the first transmission of the radio aired on 21 February in 1951. It was aired as an AM 1400 CKFH, a station which then owned by Canadian broadcaster Foster Hewitt. In 1960, the station gradually moved to 1430 AM frequency. Its power increased up to 5,000 watts. Afterward, power more increased to 10,000 and at the end, finally to 50,000 watts. In 1981, Canadian broadcaster Foster Hewitt sold it.
They sold the network to Telemedia. It adopted its current name as CJCL in the same period. At the same time, CJCL changed its format to adult contemporary format. Changing in the current format, the station started transmitting talk radio programming. However, it geared back to the previous music format, emphasizing on oldies. On 6 February 1995, the station got CKYC from Rogers at noon. The two stations also switched to later frequencies 590 AM as ‘The Fan.’ Rogers Media got the station in the year of 2002. In 2011, when it became as ‘Sportsnet Radio The Fan 590’. On a problem with rival indications, in 2011, the station altered its identity to ‘Sportsnet 590 The Fan’.
