Springbok Internet Radio is a commercial broadcasting radio station from Johannesburg, South Africa. South Africa Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) launched the station on 1 May 1950. It broadcasts in English and Afrikaans languages. It provides high-quality advertisement service to clients. Eric Egan was the first station’s voice. Its essential establishment purpose was to support SABC financially. During 1950, many programs imported from Australia, but it required many budgets. After that, it designs and produced its programs through a network of independent production houses. Thirty percent of Springbok Radio shows independent productions were sold to sponsors by the end of 1950.
In the same year, its revenue was £205,439, and in 1961, it had grown to over two million Rand. By 1970 FM had reached R6.5 million. Radio was operating at a heavy loss in 1985. It broadcast 19 hours a day. Its popularity showed a downward trend in the evenings because people watched television at night and turned off the FM. After the heavy loss, lost listenership, and facing competition from television, it ceased broadcasting on 31 December 1985. SABC keep the Radio legacy alive and passed it to the Springbok Radio Preservation Society of South Africa. Now FM called Springbok Radio Revisited.
