WBPT 106.9 FM, is an American radio station branded as “106-9 The Eagle”. Homewood, Alabama is its city of license, and Birmingham and central Alabama is the area it covers. WBPT is owned by SummitMedia, together with six other stations in the Birmingham broadcasting market.
It principally airs classic rock music programming which is the most popular music genre in the United States with an audience between 30-50 age groups.
About WBPT 106.9 FM:
WBPT is Birmingham’s only classic rock music-formatted 24/7 radio station. With the transmitter positioned atop Red Mountain, It has joint studios with six sister stations in the Cahaba area in remote southeast Birmingham. “The Only Classic Rock Station” is its slogan whereas its call sign indicates “Birmingham’s PoinT”. The station streams on the internet for music fans worldwide. In addition to playing the famous music genre, the station’s programming includes live shows, entertainment, contests, and area events. All local DJ host the daily line-up. The other classic rock stations in Alabama are WBPT, WMHZ, WRKH, and WTAK.
History:
In 1947, the 106.9 frequency first went on the air as WBRC-FM as the FM partner to WBRC, transmitting on 102.5 FM. The station went in the dark the following year, returning to the air in 1957 with Top 40 music format until Moony Broadcasting purchased both, AM and FM stations in 1972.
In 1977, the station’s call letters were altered WKXX with improved broadcasting means. Branded as “Kicks 106”, WKXX came out to be the only Top 40 music-formatted FM station in Birmingham on 8/5/1977 rising to the pinnacle of success. After stunting with few other formats, the station in 1989, resumed with straight Top 40 genre branded as “X-106”.
In 1992, 106.9 became WODL with the brand name “Oldies 106.9” till 2001 while in 2005, the station added rock classic hits now being known “106-9 the Eagle”. In 2012, Cox Radio, Inc. declared the sale 22 other radio stations including WBPT to Summit Media LLC.
