SAfm 104.6 FM is the national English language public broadcasting radio station of SABC situated in Radio Park, Auckland Park, Johannesburg, Pretoria, South Africa. It is the only national news and talks radio station. It was established at the time of the creation of the SABC in 1936. FM was formerly known as “A Programme,” becoming the English Service when the Afrikaans Service came into being a year later. In 1985, FM changed its name to Radio South Africa and, after ten years, to SAfm. The station, also known as “full-spectrum” radio channel, broadcast news, music, art, drama, information, children’s programs, and sport up until 1995.
It is the first FM to introduce “talk format” and current on-air affairs programs. It changed its program format during the next eight years. FM moved away from full-spectrum broadcasting. Children and teenage programs had been removed. It transmits only news, information, and music in favor of talk show format. ICASA, the broadcasting governing body, instructed SAfm to re-introduce both drama and children’s programming in 2006. It targets a market audience is between the age of LSM’s 7-10 and 35-49. It on-air 24 hours transmission on 104.6 MHz frequency on the FM band. FM live streaming is available on the internet worldwide. Its tagline is “South Africa’s News and Information Leader.”
