X-K FM 107.9 (Xun & Khwe) is a community broadcasting radio station from Kimberley, South Africa. It was launched on 18 of August 2000 and inaugurated by late Minister of communication DR. Ivy Matsepe Casaburi at Schmidt’s drift. SABC (South Africa Broadcasting Corporation) owned and operated the station. Its established purpose is to promote and preserve the San language. That’s why community people applied for a broadcasting license. The license was granted to the SABC for the San people. Initially, FM airs from a container with four male presenters for 06:00 to 13:00 hours.
In 2001, two female presenters joined it. In 2003, the San people relocated to Platfontein; then, the station was moved to Kimberley studios and extend broadcasting to 15 hours a day. After that, SABC employed more a station manager, presenters, producers, music compiler, archivist, and a technical lady. Now FM has 17 staff members, excluding freelancers. Its coverage areas are 30 km radius around Platfontein, which is approximately 15 km from Kimberley on the road to Barkly West in the Northern Cape. Its transmission frequency is 107.9 runs on the FM band. FM target age groups are 16 – 24 (21%), 25 – 34 (34%), 35 – 49 (15%), and 50+ (30%).
