About 2UE AM 954
In the 1920s, Postmaster General Department applied for a Class B license for a commercial radio station. They received it on 7th November 1924. The initial call sign was 2EU, where EU stands for Electrical Utilities. But the station, along with its launch, changed the name to 2UE. Therefore, 2UE commenced its first broadcasting on 26th January 1925. The initial frequency was 1025 kHz AM. Cecil Stevenson is known to be the founder of Electrical Utilities.
The studios were in the dining room of Stevenson Maroubra’s home. All the studio’s equipment was homemade. The time duration of on-air broadcasting was from 8 pm to 10 pm. Besides this, FM is also famous for being the first one in Australia’s radio market for on-airing advertisements. In 1935, it switched to the frequency of 950 kHz AM. After December 1935, Broadcasting Service Association started collaborating by providing resources to 2UE and its sister station 2GB.
On 7th January 1937, the authorities replicated the concept of Blue Network and Red Network from the US’s NBC Network and applied both of these sister stations. But in February 1937, 2GB decided to construct its national network, which formed Macquarie Network in 1938. Both sister stations jointly managed this network. As a result, these stations began Major Broadcasting Network in 1938.
