History of 105.3 Virgin Radio
In 1949, the radio channel was launched by local broadcaster Carl Pollock on 106.1 FM. It was the first radio to operate independently without an AM sister station in Canada. FM left the air due to the limited audience reach of FM radio at the time in 1951. Television station CKCO-TV was launched by Pollock subsequently in 1954, and in 1959, AM radio station CKKW. After that, in 1967, relaunched CFCA as an easy listening station. In 1970, Pollock’s broadcast holdings became part of Electro home. A local consortium consisting of Jack Schoone purchased both CFCA and CKKW in 1992. In 1993, CHUM Radio acquired the station hold. Later, it adopted an adult contemporary format by ten; the station had migrated from its beautiful music/easy listening.

Kool FM (1994-2016)
CFCA moved to classic rock as 105.3 Kool FM at Noon on August 12, 1994. FM added pop/rock songs into their playlist during the early 2000s. It also flipped to Hot AC. In 2007, FM was purchased by CTVglobemedia and has been currently Bell Media-owned since 2011. It was slightly rebranded as Kool 105.3 in 2012 and also adopted a new logo and a new slogan, “Today’s Best Variety.”
Virgin Radio (2016-present)
CFCA radio started stunting with Christmas music on July 26, 2016, teasing a change to come that noon on that Friday, July 29. At the same time, FM changed its format to Top 40/CHR and branded itself as 105.3 Virgin Radio. It makes CFCA the 8th station to utilize Canada’s “Virgin Radio” branding. At that time, CJCH FM in Halifax rebranded to “Virgin.” The first song was “This Is What You Came For” by Calvin Harris (featuring Rihanna), a play on “Virgin” as well as Halifax’s “Virgin.”
