5FM 89.9 is a broadcasting radio station serving from Durban, South Africa. It is owned by the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). The station manager is JD Mostert, and the program manager is Siyanda Fikelephi. It is initially known as “Radio 5.” It first went on-air on 13 October 1975. The name shows that it is the 5th radio channel of SABC after Radio Suid-Afrika, Radio South Africa, Springbok Radio, and Radio Bantu. In 1992, FM rebranded its name as “5FM.” Its broadcasting areas are Welgedacht, Maraisburg, Pietersburg, Durban, Bloemfontein, Brackenfell, Port Elizabeth, and Grahamstown.
Music is the heart of the channel. It also broadcast news, sports, traffic updates, sports information. The transmission language is 98.0 MHz on the FM band. Its transmission especially targets youth. The transmission timing is 24/7. Radio 702, Capital 604 are the station competitors. Listeners catch it live worldwide via live streaming on the internet. It has 866,000 weekly listenership, 322,128 likes on Facebook, 868,633 followers on Twitter, and 1,600,000 following 5FM DJs on Twitter. The station slogan is “The power of 5 FM.”
