Toronto, Ontario, Canada‘s CHTO (1690 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station. The station broadcasts ethnic radio programming. Owning it is Canadian Hellenic Toronto Radio Inc., a company led by John Maniatakos, the son of Peter Maniatakos, who also owns the Odyssey Television Network. Although the station needs to air programs in various languages, CHTO’s programming is primarily in Greek. The Riverdale neighborhood’s Danforth Avenue is home to CHTO’s radio studios. The station broadcast at 6,000 watts during the day.
But at night, it lowers its strength to 1,000 watts in order to prevent interference with other radio stations. It uses a non-directional antenna. The transmitter is located in the O’Connor-Parkview district close to the Don River on Waterman Avenue at Hollinger Road.
Additionally, listeners can hear it in Mississauga on repeater station CHTO 1 at 1490 kHz. Its programming slot consists of local news, traffic, weather forecasts, interviews, community events, everyday life, sports show, and great Greek music. It airs 24 hours transmission worldwide through live streaming on the AM band.
History of 1690 AM Listen Live
Since 1966, Mrs. Maniatakos has run CHCR FM, a closed circuit specialist radio service in Toronto. This channel broadcasts Greek-language content around the clock. As part of their digital radio offerings, it was initially offered as an SCMO service (through CKFM FM) but then switched to cable and was available in the Toronto area on Rogers Digital Cable channel 959. Rogers Cable now broadcasts CHTO in place of CHCR FM, which stopped airing in 2007 after it started.
Due to technical issues, the station’s launch was delayed from its planned target date of the end of 2006. It began broadcasting in September 2007. To better serve the towns of Mississauga and Brampton, it applied to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) on June 10, 2009. CRTC approved the application on November 5, 2009. As of March 2010, it started broadcasting at its new power. Due to the passing of his mother, the station’s original owner Mrs. Maniatakos, in 2009, the CRTC granted a change of ownership of the station on December 4, 2012, to John Maniatakos.
Canadian Hellenic Toronto Radio Inc. submitted a request on October 14, 2015, to add an AM transmitter in Mississauga. With a daytime output of 23 watts and a nighttime power of 770 watts, the new transmitter transmits at a frequency of 1490 kHz. CHTO-1 is the call sign for 1490 AM. The authorities granted approval on September 1, 2016.
