In June 1978, CHIP FM 101.9, Radio Communautaire de Pontiac, registered as a non-profit organization. On March 1st, 1981, it aired. Over a hundred people created CHIP 101.9 to give the Pontiac area a local media source. The CRTC has awarded it a French language license. Through its mandate, it guarantees the promotion of linguistic diversity within the Pontiac territory.
The station’s service area covers Pontiac, including all the communities comprising the MRC Pontiac and the Municipality of Pontiac. This is a part of the MRC des Collines-de-l’Outaouais. Additionally, FM updates its listeners on events in Pontiac and the Outaouais region, Quebec, Canada and the rest of the world. It uses a transmitter with a power of 10 KW to transmit on the FM band at a frequency of 101.9. CHIP 101.9 provides its listeners with various programming to meet everyone’s needs in the community. This includes English-language programming intended to inform the English-speaking Quebec communities of Pontiac. FM broadcasts about what is happening there as well as elsewhere in Quebec. In addition to being a leader in local news, FM also plays a significant role in the region’s cultural scene. FM particularly provides Pontiac residents access to musical and cultural offerings from Quebec.
History of CHIP FM 101.7
Throughout its history, Pontiac Community Radio has distinguished itself. As a true community-driven project, it has created programming that honors the accomplishments and values of its residents. To achieve financial stability after the station launched, CHIP steadily changed during the 1980s and 1990s. At this time, the radio station also launched Bingo Radio, which would eventually attract thousands of individuals and help it provide services to its listeners. In the early 2000s, a building on Principale Street in Fort-Coulonge served as the home of CHIP 101.9’s new permanent offices.
The company experienced significant growth in the 2010s, partly because of its emphasis on local news. In 2016, CHIP changed its frequency from 101.7 to 101.9. It entirely changed its image and emphasized local news and listeners’ entertainment. The floods that destroyed the Pontiac region in 2019 served as a reminder of the channel’s significance and role. With time, Radio has evolved into a multi-platform medium. It offers interviews, broadcast news, and written news through its website, reports, discussions, and video interviews.
