This station submitted its application to go on air on April 20, 2005, as a commercial radio station in the region of Sechelt. In addition, it would also provide services to the adjoining areas such as Langdale, Gibsons, Roberts Creek, and Pender Harbor. The format that is intended to follow was pop adult music during that time. Pop adult music consisted of music pertaining to the era of the 60s, 70s, and 80s. The frequency that was initially proposed by the station was 93.1 MHz. However, the station changed it to 91.7 MHz by making an amendment later on.
The sign-on of this radio happened officially in May 2006. In 2007, West wave sought permission to open another station in Powell River Market. However, this got rejected based on not having enough revenues to operate another station. After that, it sought permission to assemble a transmitter for rebroadcasting in Powell River. This application also got rejected based on additional transmitters impacting the station negatively. That station was already existing in the area, CHQB. Also, the radio had been operating for only two years till that time.
During 2010, the station switched its format to classic hits. Previously, it was adult contemporary. It was only for the time period of summers. During 2012, two of its members, a manager of the Coast office and another of the Coast Guard assisting died while a training exercise of rescue and research was being carried out according to routine. During the fall season of 2012, it again changed its format to classic hit oldies. When Vista became its owner, it came to be known as 91.7 Coast FM.
