95.9 Virgin Radio (CJFM FM) is a commercial English-language radio station airing live transmissions from Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Bell Media is the station’s owner and broadcasts a Top 40/CHR format. Its broadcasting power is 41,200 watts as a class C1 station and uses an omnidirectional antenna atop Mount Royal. Moreover, the station’s studios are at the Bell Media building at 1717 René-Lévesque Boulevard East in Downtown Montreal. Its on-air lineup includes sports, information, weather, and traffic information. It airs its transmission on the FM band and listens live streaming on the radio’s website worldwide.
History of 95.9 Virgin Radio
On October 1, 1962, it went on air for the first time. To match it with its sister AM station, owner CJAD, Ltd. originally planned to use the call sign CJAD FM. Four FM stations went on air in the 1960s using shared transmitting infrastructure on the new Mount Royal tower, including CJFM.
Throughout the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, CJFM 96 offered a variety of music genres, including adult contemporary, album-focused rock, and easy listening. By 1992, CJFM had changed its name to Mix 96 and shifted its programming to a hot AC format that leaned more toward the Top 40. Standard Broadcasting owned CJFM from 1962 to 2007. Astral Media purchased the station from Standard Broadcasting in 2007. Bell Media purchased Astral in 2013.
