The radio first went on air in the year 1977 under the brand name KSCF. This radio became the reason that KADI FM changed its frequency from 96.5 to 96.3 to make a place for it.
During 1980, 97.1 FM adopted the call letters ‘FCFM’, and its format got changed to adult contemporary. Then, in 1985, the station adopted new call letters, i.e. KLTH also known as K-Lite 97. Its format became soft adult contemporary in nature. After that, there could be seen a gradual change in its format, and it became ‘new adult contemporary. In August of 1989, the owners of the station got changed. Its call letters became KHTK, and the station changed to Top 40 with the Hot 97.

However, this ended after the lease of WKBQ, which was its contemporary station at that time. Both the stations started broadcasting Top 40 with a merge of DJs from both. During 1992, its call letters got changed once again as KXOK FM. Its format became of Urban Oldies. In 1998, Sinclair Broadcast Group bought this radio. This group was also the owner of KDNL FM which was affiliated with ABC. After that, the station’s format switched to a classic rock format. At the end of 2000, Emmis Communications bought some of the properties of Sinclair Broadcasting.
This led to the two stations, KXOK and KSHE, turning into sister stations. To avoid the overlapping of format, KXOK changed its format to that of talk radio. The primary focus of the station was a female audience in those days. It started using the name 97.1 FM Talk. The station moved towards politics-based talk in 2002 as it was not receiving many audiences. Its famous talkers were Don Imus, Bill O’Reilly, and Sean Hannity. During that time, it switched its name and started using 97-1 the Link Real Life Radio. The call letters again changed to KFTK FM in September of 2016.
