History of 93.7 WDJC FM:
WSGN-FM in Birmingham was the early bearer of the 93.7 frequency on airwaves. The station went on air in 1947 initially owned and maintained by the parent enterprise of The Birmingham News. It was also the sister channel of one of the relatively well-known radio service on AM frequency. In 1953, the mother company of The News bought WAFM-FM, WAPI, and WAFM-TV, sold the both, WSGN-AM and WSGN-FM to Jemison Broadcasting Company and soon after to Winston-Salem Broadcasting Company. Since FM radio was in its early years and had neither been famous nor commercial, the station was closed down in 1955.
The Origin of WSFM:
Owned by James Melonas, in 1958, a new station hit the airwaves on 93.7 FM with a new call sign- WSFM, programming Classical music. Melonas, after struggling to find sponsors, sold it to Crawford Broadcasting Company in 1967. With the new call sign, WDJC, the channel switched to Christian programming, later adding Contemporary Christian music in the mid-70s. Towards the close of the 90s, WRRS-FM established itself as a grave competitor of WDJC-FM, forcing it to become an exclusive Contemporary Christian music service. By chance, in 2003, Crawford Broadcasting purchased the rival station and switched its programming to talk radio.
