History of WAYE 1220 AM:
The station debuted in 1949 with the call letters WEDR originally owned by J.L Doss, the company president and the former owner of WJLD. During the initial phase since its launch, It remained a daytimer. By 1960, the service switched its call sign from WEDR to WEZB, featuring programming from WENN. After stunting with many formats, WAYE went dark for a couple of years from 2010-2012 and adopted the current Regional Mexican programming in 2013.
Competitors:
In 1963 the channel became WAQY branded as “Wacky 1220”. After the change of format to Top 40, it became a strong contender of three other stations in the Birmingham market: WVOK, WSGN, and WYDE. In 1970 the station switched to Country music, and in 1971, it chose a format called “for women only” becoming WBUL after a year with altered soul music programming. This change placed it in combat against three stations on AM dial viz WJLD, WENN as well as WENN-FM.
