The station broadcasted unofficially three months before its permanent license. Therefore, officially, the station commenced its broadcasting on 9th June 1975. Initially, the programming compromises eight languages. The owner operated this station to serve the ethnic community of Australia with information. In 1977, the station began operating in 33 languages. In November 1977, the Broadcasting and Television Act 1942 ordered to on-air the Special Broadcasting Service. On 1st January 1978, SBS Radio was given to perform this duty. The operational frequency of this station is 97.7 FM.
