With a talk format, Radio X (CHOI FM) is a French-language FM radio station that operates out of Quebec City, Canada, at 98.1 MHz. Radio X was a reference to “Generation X,” which most CHOI’s listeners identify as. Genex Communications has owned it since July 1996. According to the Bureau of Broadcast Measurement statistics published in December 2004, FM had 443,100 listeners. It increases its audience from 380,500 listeners earlier in the year, making it the most popular radio station in the city.

The channel has a reputation for presenting controversial ideas and populist ideas. Because of several contentious political statements made by the station, numerous groups, including famous politicians and homosexual and feminist campaigners, have turned their attention to it. After the CRTC made a ruling, the station’s license expired, and its request to renew it was denied. In 2004 for failing “to conform with the Radio Regulations 1986 (the Regulations) and CHOI’s Code of Ethics, adherence to which is required by one of its license conditions.”

The station was permitted to continue broadcasting without a license while a legal dispute played out. Genex announced its intention to sell the station to RNC Media on May 8, 2006. On October 20, 2006, the CRTC authorized the deal, which was technically granting a new license to RNC Media on the same frequency rather than a straightforward transfer of ownership.
