History of the station
Earle C. Antony is the founder of the KFI AM 640. He is also the owner and founder of KECA, which is the current KABC.
Initially, the radio channel operated under a 50-watt transmitter that was part of a crank telephone. During this period, Anthony did everything to do with the station from a garage, before he moved to a Packard. Since he was all alone, he only managed four or five hours of broadcasting per day.
KFI AM 640 was part of the red network under the National Broadcasting Company. During this time, the station made several remarkable achievements. During World War II, for instance, it broadcasted President Franklin’s chats in fireside and helped in keeping calm.
Famous Programs:
Monitor
This was one of the best and influential programs by this radio station. The program was aired for 20 years, between 1955 and 1975. The program aired live on the NBC Radio Network. Originally the monitor program began on Saturday morning all the way to Sunday midnight. Specifically, the station was a combination of music, comedy, sports, and celebrity interviews. When the program first began, the simulcast was the first hour of the program while Morgan Betty was the first voice in the program.
Frost Warning
For a long time, listeners of the station believed that FI was an abbreviation for Farmers Information. Every evening during the winter, the station would give a frost report to the farmers specifically those who dealt with citrus fruits on whether or not they should allow their windmills to stay on.
In 1958 and 1949, KFI-AM aired different programs, apart from the ones in KFI (AM). Some of the programs broadcasted by the station during this time include Music for you, Afternoon Melodies, and Symphony Moods. More than five other stations also drew their programs from the channel.
The radio station marked its 50th anniversary in 1972. The day was marked by 12 hours of special programming with interviews and commentaries.
