These waves reach Baker to the North of the state. With studios both in Miracle Mile and Wilshire Boulevard, it can defeat most of its competition and has done so over the years.
K-EARTH 101 FM History
After its initiation in 1941, the oldest operating station in the state soon began its dominance with K45LA as the call letters. It first broadcasted on 44.5 while on a tower on Mount Lee, but after then of the Second World War, the FCC commissioned the new 88 to 108 frequency range allowing it to move to 99.7. The call letters shifted from the original K45LA to KHJ-FM after merging with KHJ. The frequency changed to 101.1 in 1948, and the transmitter moved to Mount Wilson for better coverage.
Close to 15 years later, it switched to the top 40 format due to demand from the listeners. It was the era of the sixties, and rock and roll were becoming popular. To maintain a stretch of audiences, it developed the ‘hit parade’ to mix oldies and current hits. This way, both the old conservative fans of the oldies and classics can enjoy at the same time with the upbeat rock lovers on the same platform.
New Name K-EARTH 101 FM
In 1972, the demand for change became apparent that there was a need to move further on hence the introduction of the gold format. This approach included songs from the past as well as those, which were the latest hits. This idea made the station unique from the rest, which played current music in the chats. After Earth Day became popular, it was incorporated in the new name ‘K-Earth.’ The initial hence changed to K-EARTH echoing the sound and notes of the original KHJ jingle. Since KHJ was still on the air, the top 40 became competitive among the stations. Current music clashed with old styles. In the end, adult contemporary format emerged in the 1980s as the way forward. K-Earth was committed to sticking to the oldies, so the ‘classic rock and roll’ became the bridge to combine all extremes.
K-EARTH 101 FM boasted of the ratings brought by oldies, and many other stations in the United States. The songs, which were features most ranged from 1955 to 1984 including all the variations of the 60s from Doo-wop, to Motown. Elvis Presley and the Beatles’ songs were significantly mainstays.
Famous Programs
To capture the attention and loyalty of the listeners, the radio introduced the ‘Sixties weekend and the ‘Souvenirs of the Seventies weekend,’ to bring more attention to celebrating the music.
