History of CFRA 580 AM:
On May 3, 1947, Frank Ryan launched CFRA. The station used 560 kHz frequency for the first time. The first studios of the station were situated on O’Connor Street at the Ottawa Auditorium. The studios did not change their place for the first ten years. Founder of the station, Frank Ryan left the mortal world in 1965. After his death, his wife Kathleen managed the station. In 1968, she could not manage and sold it.
On August 18, 1986, CFRA adopted a new format, “Favourites of Yesterday and Today.” It introduced itself as an adult contemporary radio station that was gold based. In the same year, it also switched from Top 40 to gold-based AC. Its sister station CHUM located in Toronto also brought the same changing.
News-Talk Format for Programming:
CFRA shifted the format of all its old stations in 1991. On June 1993, it adopted the current news-talk format. After the foundation of CJMJ-FM in 1991, CFRA ultimately left the format of adult contemporary. In 2002, CFRA took the slogan “left on the dial, right on the issues.” This slogan was a testimonial to its conservative talk format.
The current location of the studios was downtown Market Media Mall of CHUM till 2000. In 2007 CFRA had another ownership. CTV globe media bought it, and its CHUM sister stations. Later CTV globe media sold it to Bell Media. After having the ownership, Bell Media agency shifted all stations to the FM band in January 2012.
